24 110 steps to inform ation and freedom of opinion The original Käfigturm or ‘prison tower’, built in 1256, was part of the City of Bern’s fortifica- tions. Following a fire in 1405, it was used as a prison, hence the name it still bears today. How- ever, the original tower had to be demolished and was replaced by the current Käfigturm built between 1641 and 1644. The Käfigturm is the property of canton Bern, but has been used by the Federal Chancellery and Parliamentary Services as the Political Forum of the Confederation since 1999. The Political Forum uses exhibitions and other events on pol itical issues to stimulate debate. In addition, the Political Forum has rooms avail- able in which members of the public can stage their own political events.
